The Ministry of Commerce and Industry recently issued a Quality Control Order making BIS certification mandatory for cookware, utensils, and food and beverage cans. This requires that these products meet standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to ensure quality and safety.
Quality Control Order for Cookware, Utensils and Cans for Foods and Beverages
On 11the October, 2024, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) issued a Quality Control Order after consulting with the Bureau of Indian Standards to mandating the BIS certification for cookware, utensils and cans used for food and beverages. This decision of ministry aims to enhance the quality and safety of these essential consumer products, it will highlight the commitment of manufacturers to consumer protection.
Short title and implementation–
(1) This Order may be called the Cookware, Utensils and Cans for Foods and Beverages (Quality Control) Order, 2024.
(2) Save as otherwise provided in this order, it shall come into force on the date of its publication in the official Gazette.
Date of Implementation of QCO-
For other than micro and small enterprises (foreign or large manufacturers):
1st April, 2025
For small enterprises:
1st July, 2025
For micro enterprises:
1st October, 2025
If the manufacturers of cookware, utensils and cans used for food and beverages obtain their BIS license, they are allowed to adhere ISI mark on their products. ISI mark shows that the products is tested and certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
