Quality Control Order for Furniture
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, DPIIT) has notified a Quality Control Order for Furniture to make BIS ISI Mark Certification mandatory by consulting the Bureau of Indian Standards. According to this Quality Control Order, the manufacturers of certain furniture have to get their products tested and certified as per the IS number of products.
Short title and commencement:
(1) This order may be called the Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2023.
(2) It shall come into force on the expiry of 12 month from the date of publication of this notification.
For Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises it shall come into force on the expiry of 18 months from the date of publication of this notification.
Indian Standards Reference for Furniture
The furniture categories listed below must conform to the following Indian Standards as specified by BIS:
- Work Chairs: IS 17631: 2022
- General Purpose Chairs and Stools: IS 17632: 2022
- Tables and Desks: IS 17633: 2022
- Storage Units: IS 17634: 2022
- Beds: IS 17635: 2022
- Beds and Bunk Beds: IS 17636: 2022
All furniture specified under this Order must conform to the relevant Indian Standards as notified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and bear the ISI Mark under a valid BIS license.
Manufacturing, importing, storing for sale, selling, or distributing non-compliant furniture products is prohibited after the enforcement of this Order.
