BIS ISI mark is mandatory for all potable water bottles made of copper, stainless steel and aluminum. As per IS 17803:2022, these bottles must meet strict quality, safety, and durability benchmarks. Manufacturers or importers of these types of bottles cannot sell or distribute without obtaining the BIS license.
Quality Control Order for Potable Water Bottles
The MINISTRY OF COMMERCE AND INDUSTRY (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade) on March 5, 2024, issued a Quality Control Order for Potable Water Bottles (Copper, Stainless Steel, Aluminium), after consulting with the Bureau of Indian Standards.
Short title and commencement-
This Order may be called the Potable Water Bottles (Quality Control) Order, 2024.
- Foreign and large manufacturer must comply within 3 months of notification.
- Small enterprises, it shall come into force with effect from 6 months from the date of publication of this notification.
- Micro enterprises, it shall come into force with effect from 9 months from the date of publication of this notification.
Penalty for contravention-
Any person who contravenes the provisions of this Order shall be punishable under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
Conclusion
If you manufacture or sell copper, stainless steel or aluminum water bottles for the Indian market, BIS ISI certification is mandatory. After getting BIS license manufacturers can adhere to ISI Mark on their products which shows that the products tested and certified as per IS 17803:2022 by the Bureau of Indian Standards and safe to use and without BIS license manufacturers are not allowed to sell their products in the Indian market.
